FBH questions/issues

Well after having run with the FBH for a few months I thought I'd air my thoughts.

First off the unit supplied by Rob and Steve works as it should comes on at 5° and runs up to 79° so no issues with that.

Now the but, in the cold weather at 70 on the motorway (12 miles) the engine struggled to get to 79°. Same weather conditions but in the zt similar engine temp with no FBH both cars have 88°in line stat so my conclusion cold air flow on the motorway and an efficient diesel engine means they just don't get hot ! The 75 with FBH also got warmer quicker so it's doing its job fine, just running constantly on the journey.

In the warmer weather they get up to to 88° so outside temp is a factor.

In the cold weather the FBH was constantly runnig at idle and the mpg dropped by about 6 (gessing it was the FBH running for the journey)! So my question is can an off switch be fitted to the system ? Operated from the car so it can be turned off once the car has got to temp.

I've got the remote to fire it from the house and I'd like to get the cabin heater remote added too later on so the switch would need to work with this too .

Would be interesting to see what other peoples experiences thoughts were.

Hi Scott, I have an off switch connected to my keyfob but you could just as easily fit a switch in the car if you wanted too.

The FBH uses pin 1 to come on when the ambient temp is right and with the engine running so I have connected to that so i can turn it off if i wish too .

Did mine because say you go on a short journey on a cold day to say get some fuel, the FBH comes on as normal in its supplementary heater mode but as soon as you get to the garage and turn the ignition off it will go off and ramp down after a couple of minutes, meantime you have fuelled up got back in the car and started the ignition so on it comes again and has to go through its initial purge before ramping back up, in those circumstances and on short journeys I dont want it switching on and then off and then on so can disable it with the switch.

You need an LED inside the car though which will go off when you switch the FBH off just to give you the assurance that it has gone off as with engine running difficult to hear, my led is mounted inside the central light unit

Hi Rob. My friend who will be coming with me,Wedgwood Blue cdt, You did a check on his car at the March l Meet, has a problem with his fbh. We have tried shorting pin three and the fan runs but nothing else. There does not appear to be any fuel coming to it. Could you have a look at it for him please.

It will soon be time for firing up those FBHs so if you have one and need it checking over ready for the winter, the Sept and Oct Nanos will be a good place to start
